Choosing the right deep well vertical turbine pump is critical for ensuring efficient and reliable water extraction from deep wells. These pumps are widely used in agricultural irrigation, industrial water supply, and municipal projects due to their ability to handle high head and deep installation conditions. This guide outlines the key factors to consider when selecting the most suitable pump for your application.

1. Determine the Pump Type Based on Well Diameter and Water Quality

Different types of deep well vertical turbine pumps have specific requirements regarding the diameter of the well casing. The pump’s maximum external diameter should typically be 25–50 mm smaller than the well diameter. If the well-bore is skewed or irregular, even more clearance may be necessary to prevent contact between the pump and the well wall, which could lead to vibrations and well damage.

2. Select the Pump Flow Rate According to Well Output

Each well has an optimal water output that ensures long-term performance and sustainability. The selected flow rate of the deep well vertical turbine pump should not exceed this rate, especially when the water level drops to half the depth of the well. Excessive pumping can lead to collapse or sedimentation of the well, while insufficient pumping under-utilizes the well’s capacity. It is recommended to perform a pumping test to determine the maximum sustainable output, which can then guide flow rate selection.

3. Determine the Required Pump Head

The head of the deep well vertical turbine pump should be calculated based on the vertical distance between the water level and the outlet point (net head), plus head loss due to friction and other pipeline resistances. Typically, the head loss accounts for 6–9% of the net head, usually around 1–2 meters. The impeller’s bottom stage should be submerged 1–1.5 meters below the dynamic water level. Additionally, the total length of the pump column should not exceed the manufacturer’s specifications.

It is important to note that deep well vertical turbine pumps should not be used in wells where sand content exceeds 0.1% (1/10,000). High sand content can accelerate bearing wear, increase vibration, and significantly shorten the pump’s lifespan.
